Can't Forget About The Kids
If you are wanting to know how to take care of your child's hair, then I can tell you how. First things first. You want to put extensions on your child's hair. Maybe that will make It easy on you when it is time to do your childs hair. No! No! No! Do not put extensions (fake hair) in your child's hair. Children have fragile hair. Even if your child has a lot of hair. It does not matter. You could brake off your child's hair and she could be bold or have some bold spots when she or he gets to be a teenager or an adult. I have seen children that have come to get their hair done by me and they hardly had any hair on their heads. It was because, the adults put perm on the child's head and did not know what else to do with it or it was because they put extensions on the child's head when they were to young. I know this because the adults told me so. Learn how to fix your child's hair on its own before it is to late. Sometimes if you loose hair in the wrong place it may not grow back! Wait till your child is close to 10 years old till you put extensions in your child's hair. Just make sure the child has a lot of hair and the extensions are not put on to tight. If the child is under 5 years old that is way too young. I do not want to see anymore bald children. I can hear some of your saying, my friend has been putting extensions in her child's hair for years and nothing has ever happened. Well, you have to consider this, do you want to take that chance? Because even though she has been putting fake hair in the child's hair for years, the damage may not show up for a long time. But trust me, it will. When you do put extensions in your child's hair, make sure it is not to tight. If it is to tight, spray product on the hair or water to loosen it up. I don't braid extensions on childrens hair until they are at least 8 years old, and they have to have a lot of hair. That way I am not working with thin fragile hair. You can pull out thin hair.
Now lets talk about those nasty perms. I know, I know, I can hear you say, she hates those perms but the perms have saved my life. I can't even comb through my hair or my child's hair without a perm or relaxer. First of all, what are you doing trying to comb through natural hair? Pick, pick, pick. You pick out natural hair, you don't comb it. Also, it may be easier to do when your hair is wet. Wash your child's hair then braid it up when it is wet. It will be easier to work with.
This is for people who have adopted black children or if you are a parent who just does not know what to do with your child's hair. I have been getting adults who say that their child does not like to get his or her hair combed. So, the adult wants to dread their hair. It can be done but, I have tried to do some and it is better to me if you just cut the childs hair. Dreading is a long process. The child may not want to wait that long or the adult will not want to deal with the dreadlock stages. What I say is go to a salon and have the child's hair cut or if you insist on getting dreads then you need to prepare the childs hair for the process. Because the stylist is going to have to comb through the child's hair to make it into dreads. The child will scream and yell and maybe even run away. To prepare the hair to be dreaded, you will need to several months before, comb that child's hair! Here is how you do it: when the hair is wet not dry but wet, section off the child's hair and comb from the bottom up. You can even put a little conditioner on the hair or some detaingler. When you have combed all of the child's hair in the sections, Comb the whole head all together. Do this every other day until your appointment. This will make it easier on your child and it will make it easier on the stylist who is going to do the dreading.
Another thing I need to tell you. When you are braiding your child's hair or twisting your child's hair, don't put rubber bands close to the childs scalp. You may pull some of the child's hair out and the child may be in pain and not tell you. Start off with a braid or twist, not a rubber band.
When you get your childs hair in cornrows and it is the childs first time, please, please PLEASE don't ask for an elaborate style. What I mean is, don't ask for a cornrow design. No zig zags, no pony tails, no tree braids, no circles. Nothing like that. What you need to do is straight back. A straight line straight back. The reason is because, your child has never had their hair cornrowed before. You may say, they have had their hair single braided before. It is not the same thing. Cornrows hurt! Not just from me but from other stylists as well. I had my hair braided by a friend and she tried to kill me! I am a grown tail adult and cornrows still hurt. I have dreads now so I don't have to worry about that anymore, but listen to what I am trying to tell you. For your childs first time, get their hair cornrowed STRAIGHT BACK! Also, you may want to get straight back a few times in a row, so the child can get used to having their hair braided.
